Hachi FAQs

  • It uses an E26/E27 LED bulb that meets the recommended specifications. A bulb may be included for initial testing. Only LED bulbs should be used, as incandescent or halogen bulbs may generate excessive heat. You may choose a different LED bulb to suit your preferred brightness.

  • The rice paper diffuses light beautifully for a gentle, even glow. It looks light and airy and gives the lamp its classic Akari washi style character.

  • Yes. The shade is removable. If you ever need a replacement, we can help you source one.

  • Just a few minutes. Clear instructions and any tools you need are included. Fit the shade, screw in the bulb and plug it in.

  • Give it a light dust with a soft brush or microfiber cloth. Keep it dry and handle it gently so the paper stays crisp.

About the Hachi Paper Lamp

A small rice paper table lamp in the Akari tradition

The Hachi is the most compact lamp in our paper range: 43cm tall with a 23cm handcrafted rice paper shade on a slim metal tripod. It's sized for tabletops rather than floors, which makes it one of the easiest ways to bring soft, Japanese-style paper light into a bedroom, study or small apartment.

Why a paper table lamp works at night

Rice paper diffuses a bulb in every direction, so the Hachi glows evenly instead of throwing a harsh beam across the room. With a warm white E26/E27 LED bulb it gives the low, relaxing light people look for in a paper bedside lamp or rice paper desk lamp, and it's light enough to move from a bedside table to a shelf or sideboard in seconds.

The Hachi follows the Akari lantern tradition that Isamu Noguchi made famous in the 1950s. It's Lamp Boy's own design and isn't affiliated with Noguchi, Vitra or Ozeki.

The Hachi as a paper bedside lamp

At 43cm tall, the Hachi sits at a comfortable height on most bedside tables. Rice paper gives a gentle, even light that's easy on the eyes before sleep, especially with a warm white bulb of around 2700K. A pair of Hachis either side of the bed is a simple way to get a calm, Japanese-inspired bedroom, and because each lamp is light, you can move one to a desk or shelf whenever you need it. For layered paper lighting in a living room, combine a Hachi on a side table with the taller Keichi on the floor.
