Roku FAQs

  • It uses an E26/E27 LED bulb that meets the recommended specifications. A bulb may be included for initial testing. Only LED bulbs should be used, as incandescent or halogen bulbs may generate excessive heat. You may choose a different LED bulb to suit your preferred brightness.

  • The rice paper diffuses light beautifully for a gentle, even glow. It looks light and airy and gives the lamp its classic Akari washi style character.

  • Yes. The shade is removable. If you ever need a replacement, we can help you source one.

  • Just a few minutes. Clear instructions and any tools you need are included. Fit the shade, screw in the bulb and plug it in.

  • Give it a light dust with a soft brush or microfiber cloth. Keep it dry and handle it gently so the paper stays crisp.

  • Height 41 cm (16.1 in). Diameter 23 cm (9.1 in). Compact enough for a bedside table or shelf, and it also works on the floor as a small accent light.

About the Roku Paper Lamp

A square rice paper lamp with a stacked, geometric shade

Roku means "six" in Japanese, and this lamp is all about geometry: a squared, stacked rice paper shade that turns a single bulb into a softly glowing, cube-like column. At 41cm tall and 23cm wide, it's a neat way to add a square paper lamp to a console, side table or bookshelf without the bulk of a round lantern.

Clean lines, soft light

Where round paper lanterns feel organic, the Roku's straight edges suit modern, Japandi and minimalist rooms. It takes one E26/E27 LED bulb, runs on a 135cm cord, and is light enough to move between rooms whenever you want to change the mood.

The Roku draws on the Akari paper lamp tradition started by Isamu Noguchi. It's Lamp Boy's own design and isn't affiliated with Noguchi, Vitra or Ozeki.

Styling a square paper lamp

The Roku's straight lines make it easier to place than a round lantern in rooms full of rectangular furniture. It sits neatly at the end of a bookshelf, on a console against a wall, or on a desk where a round shade would feel too big. In Japandi and minimalist rooms, pair it with light timber, linen and ceramics; in a more eclectic space, group it with the pyramid-shaped Kyusei for a play on geometry. Because paper diffuses light evenly, the Roku also works well as a gentle evening light in a hallway or reading nook where you don't want a bright, direct beam.

Compare the paper range

Prefer a softer outline? The Hachi has a rounded shade on a tripod, the Kyusei steps out into a pyramid-like shape, and the Keichi is tall enough for the floor. Browse all paper lamps, or read Paper Lamps vs Rice Paper Lamps: What's the Difference?
